Information About the City :

Zlín was founded in the 13th century as a settlement of craftsmen and merchants along a trade route.

The city's rapid growth began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to the establishment and expansion of the Bata shoe factory.

Zlín is situated in the southeastern part of the Czech Republic, in the historical region of Moravia, nestled among the Vizovice Hills.

Geographically, Zlín benefits from its location near the Dřevnice river, which provided power for early industrial development.

The city's population experienced a significant surge during the Bata era, transforming it from a small town into a major industrial center.

Bata's influence extended beyond manufacturing to urban planning, resulting in a unique architectural style characterized by functionalism and standardized housing.

The local economy is diversified, with industries including rubber production, engineering, food processing, and services, although historically dominated by the Bata legacy.

Zlín's cultural scene is vibrant, featuring the Filmovka film festival, which showcases student films from around the world.

The city is home to the Jan Amos Komensky University, contributing to its role as a center for education and research.

Key landmarks include the iconic Bata Skyscraper (Building 21), once one of the tallest buildings in Europe and a symbol of the company's power.

The Bata Shoe Museum in Zlín houses an extensive collection of footwear, illustrating the evolution of shoe manufacturing and design.

Zlín's functionalist architecture, designed by architects like František Lydie Gahura, is recognized for its innovative approach to urban planning and social engineering.

During the communist era, the city was renamed Gottwaldov in honor of Klement Gottwald, the first communist president of Czechoslovakia, before reverting to Zlín in 1990.

The city plays a role in national sports, particularly ice hockey, with its team, PSG Berani Zlín, having a strong tradition and fanbase.

The unique urban planning and architectural heritage of Zlín, reflecting Bata's social and industrial vision, is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.
