Information About the City :

Spello is an ancient town located in the Umbria region of central Italy, approximately 10 kilometers southeast of Perugia.

Its Etruscan origins date back to the 6th century BC, and it was later occupied by the Romans, who called it Hispellum.

Spello's medieval appearance is largely intact, with its town walls, historic center, and numerous churches and palaces.

The town is known for its annual flower festival, the Infiorata di Spello, which transforms its streets into a vibrant carpet of floral art.

Spello's population has remained relatively stable in recent decades, with approximately 8,500 inhabitants as of 2023.

The town's economy is primarily based on tourism, agriculture (particularly olive oil production), and small businesses.

Spello has a significant cultural heritage, with notable landmarks including the 12th-century Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore and the Romanesque Porta Consolare.

It is situated in the valley of the Clitunno River, known for its natural beauty and crystal-clear waters.

The town played a role in the unification of Italy during the Risorgimento and has a strong sense of national identity.

Spello is home to several palaces, including the Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Baglioni, and Palazzo Bocci, which showcase various architectural styles.

The Torre di Properzio, a 14th-century watchtower, offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

The town has contributed to the scientific community through its research on olive oil production and sustainable agriculture practices.

Spello's traditional crafts include ceramics, textiles, and woodworking, which are still practiced by local artisans.

It is not a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but its historical center and cultural heritage are recognized for their significance.

The town has been featured in several films and television productions, including "Under the Tuscan Sun" (2003).
