The Cape Cod Canal is a man-made waterway in Massachusetts that connects Cape Cod Bay in the north to Buzzards Bay in the south. It spans about 7 miles (11 km) and allows ships to bypass the hazardous outer waters of Cape Cod, saving time and improving safety. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the canal is used by commercial vessels, fishing boats, and recreational craft. It is bordered by scenic walking and biking paths and crossed by three major bridges: two for vehicles and one for trains. The Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge, also known as the Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge, is a vertical-lift railroad bridge carrying a single track across the Cape Cod Canal in Bourne, Massachusetts. With a main movable span measuring 544 feet (166 m) and towers rising to 271 feet (83 m).
