Tanjong Pagar, meaning "cape of stakes" in Malay, originated as a bustling fishing village in the 19th century, named for the palisades (kelongs) built by Malay fishermen along its coast.

During the British colonial era, the area rapidly transformed into a vital port district, serving as a primary entry point for immigrants and goods, thus playing a crucial role in Singapore's early economic development.

The former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, a grand colonial building opened in 1932, historically served as the southern terminus of the Malayan Railway network (KTM) until 2011 and is now gazetted as a national monument.

Tanjong Pagar was the site of Singapore's inaugural urban renewal project in the 1960s, spearheaded by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) to redevelop its often-dilapidated colonial-era shophouses and create modern housing and commercial spaces.
