The Kiso Observatory is located in Nagano Prefecture at an elevation of about 1,130 meters on a plateau within the Kiso Mountains. The surrounding mountain range consists mainly of granitic formations and steep valleys shaped by long-term tectonic uplift and erosion. This elevated inland location provides relatively stable atmospheric conditions and reduced light pollution compared to urban areas. The observatory is operated by the University of Tokyo and is known for its 105-cm Schmidt telescope, which is used for wide-field surveys, variable star studies, and near-Earth object observations.
A snow-dusted observatory dome stands above distant, muted trees under a thick, grey, overcast sky with falling snow.
