Eikando, formally known as Zenrin-ji Temple, is situated in Sakyo Ward on the eastern side of Kyoto City. The temple was established in the early Heian period 9th century and belongs to the Jodo-shu sect of Buddhism. Its grounds include several halls arranged along a hillside, connected by corridors and stairways. Eikando is particularly noted for its garden design and pond-centered landscape layout. The temple is well known for its landscaped gardens and seasonal foliage, especially in autumn. The site functions as an active religious institution as well as a cultural and historical landmark.
