Plouescat emerged during the Middle Ages as a farming village and a major pilgrimage site thanks to the Saint-Egal chapel, which dates back to the 9th century.

Situated in the northern part of the Finistère department in the historical region of Léon, Plouescat is a coastal commune in the Pays de Morlaix, facing the Bay of Morlaix and the English Channel.
