Loreto, Baja California Sur, is a town with a population of 20,000, located in the Gulf of California on a body of water called the Upper Gulf of California. It was founded in 1697 by the Jesuit missionary Juan María de Salvatierra and is considered the oldest continuous European settlement on the peninsula of Baja California. Today, Loreto is a popular tourist destination that boasts the beautiful Bahía de Loreto National Park, pristine beaches, and other attractions like the 17th century Loreto Mission.
