Cristian, known historically by its German name "Neustadt im Burzenland" (New Town in Burzenland), was founded by Transylvanian Saxons in the 13th century and first documented in 1362.

Geographically, Cristian is situated within the fertile Burzenland depression, approximately 10 kilometers west of Brașov city, nestled at the foothills of the Făgăraș Mountains.

The village is prominently recognized for its remarkably well-preserved Fortified Church (Biserica Fortificată din Cristian), a quintessential example of Transylvanian Saxon defensive ecclesiastical architecture.

This impressive fortified church complex features a robust defensive wall, several towers, and a Gothic basilica within, designed to protect the local community from invasions, particularly during the Ottoman era.
