Investigation into Actions of St Bede's College Priest Over Abuse Allegations

The Teaching Council has announced it will investigate whether mandatory reporting obligations were met regarding allegations against Fr Rowan Donoghue, a former priest at St Bede's College who pleaded guilty to multiple charges of sexual abuse involving four boys between 1996 and 2000.

The Society of Mary first received an anonymous complaint in 2007 but was unable to verify it. The religious order removed Donoghue from public ministry and implemented a safety plan. The Teaching Council confirmed they have been collaborating with New Zealand Police since early 2025, supporting their investigation.

Following the criminal process' conclusion, the council's disciplinary process will resume, examining whether obligations were met to report conduct or competence concerns. The Society of Mary apologized for not acting on the complaint earlier and expressed regret over the harm caused.

St Bede's College rector Jon McDowall stated the school has been cooperating with police and supports victims. The college emphasizes its commitment to safeguarding students' safety and well-being, with established policies in place.

Additionally, several schools associated with Donoghue provided statements about their lack of knowledge of the allegations during his tenure. Survivors and victims are encouraged to seek support through various helpline services.
