Two British Army officers charged over mishandling of sexual assault case involving soldier Jaysley Beck who later died by suicide.
Two serving British Army officers are set to face a court martial following the mishandling of a sexual assault case involving teenage soldier Jaysley Beck, who later took her own life. Gunner Jaysley Beck, 19, was found dead at Larkhill camp in Wiltshire in 2021 after reporting she had been sexually assaulted.
Former Battery Sergeant Michael Webber was jailed for six months for his actions. An inquest revealed the Army's poor handling of her complaint significantly contributed to her death. The Service Prosecution Authority has charged Major James Hook and Colonel Sarah Shepherd, both aware of her complaint before her suicide.
Beck's family expressed relief at the charges being brought. The Ministry of Defence confirmed two individuals charged under Section 19 of the Armed Forces Act for conduct prejudicial to discipline. Beck's mother emphasizes the need for reform in military handling of serious complaints. The Army has taken steps to address these issues, including setting up a serious crime command and a taskforce on violence against women.
