A massive landslide continues to complicate efforts to reopen a key road connecting several coastal towns in Northland's east coast to Whangārei. The slip, which has been moving and causing instability, is located near Russell Road, northeast of Whangārei. Infrastructure committee chairman Brad Flower described the situation as challenging, with the landslide covering the road in mud, trees, and boulders weighing up to 100 tonnes.

Flower estimated that around 100,000 cubic metres of material are involved, with part of it already covering the road while the rest remains above, still moving. He emphasized the need for careful and safe removal of debris using specialized equipment, such as hydraulic breakers or explosives, to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of residents and essential services.

Contractors are working diligently to address the situation, with a temporary 'lifeline route' available but difficult to navigate. The only fully sealed route to the coast is via the Ōpua car ferry, adding complexity to the recovery efforts. Additionally, 35 flood-affected homes have been assessed, with some marked as too dangerous to enter due to the landslide's impact.

The situation is reminiscent of a previous landslide in 2007, but this time, Flower noted that it is an 'underslip' where the road itself has fallen away, making repairs more difficult. The recovery efforts are expected to take several weeks, with contractors working around potential weather interruptions and ensuring that the cleared debris does not pose further risks to the area.

Residents in affected communities continue to rely on the temporary route while authorities work towards a permanent solution. The repair process is being closely monitored to ensure the safety of all individuals involved and the timely restoration of essential services.
