Clayton Weatherston, convicted murderer of Sophie Elliott, denied parole after 18 years; next hearing in 2027.
After serving 18 years for the brutal murder of his ex-girlfriend Sophie Elliott in Dunedin, Clayton Weatherston has been denied parole by the Parole Board. His next hearing is set for November 2027.
The attack occurred on 9 January 2008, where Weatherston stabbed Elliott 216 times with a knife that broke during the assault. He also used scissors in his frenzied attack, causing seven blunt force injuries and disfiguring her body.
Weatherston expressed remorse and regret during his Parole Board hearing, acknowledging the attack as 'incredibly misguided' and an 'F-U' to Sophie. He admitted feeling ashamed and showed signs of anxiety and stress related to his actions.
The case led to changes in New Zealand's legal provisions regarding provocation as a defense, as Weatherston attempted to blame Elliott during his trial. The Parole Board noted that Weatherston had not undertaken any rehabilitation and remained a high-risk offender for reoffending against intimate partners.
Weatherston will remain in prison until at least November 2027, when the Parole Board will reassess his eligibility. His lawyer indicated potential progress in rehabilitation but acknowledged the need for more time before he can be considered eligible again.
