South Africa Expels Top Israeli Diplomat

South Africa has taken a decisive step by expelling Ariel Seidman, Israel's chargé d'affaires, over 'insulting attacks' on President Cyril Ramaphosa and diplomatic violations. The move was announced by South Africa's DIRCO department, declaring Seidman persona non grata and giving him 72 hours to leave the country.

Israel's embassy in Pretoria did not respond to requests for comment. The decision follows a series of unacceptable actions, including repeated insults on social media and unapproved meetings with local leaders.

The South African government is also frustrated by Israeli officials meeting with Thembu king Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo without informing them, part of what they see as an attempt to undermine their sovereignty. DIRCO has called these actions a 'gross abuse of diplomatic privilege' and a breach of the Vienna Convention.

Historical tensions between South Africa and Israel date back to Nelson Mandela's support for Palestinian rights after his release in 1990, comparing apartheid to Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories. This comparison is strongly rejected by Israel. The case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over genocide accusations has also slowed down, with no expected judgment until 2027.

Despite Ramaphosa acknowledging some wisdom in Trump’s G20 snub, Israel’s embassy praised his statement as a rare moment of diplomatic clarity. However, South Africa's premier in the Eastern Cape rejected Israeli aid offers, calling them an attempt to undermine national sovereignty.
