The Environment Canterbury agency is addressing a significant environmental incident after a tourist boat carrying over 2000 litres of marine diesel fuel grounded in Akaroa on Banks Peninsula. The Black Cat Cruises vessel remains inside the Marine Reserve, with more than 40 people requiring rescue following the incident on Saturday afternoon. The boat has sustained 'more significant damage' than initially anticipated, and it is believed that all the marine diesel fuel on board has leaked into the ocean. Environment Canterbury reported that oil sheens were observed but have decreased over the course of the day.

Wildlife specialists are on standby, and precautions are in place to mitigate any potential impacts on the surrounding environment. No wildlife distress has been reported so far. A recovery plan is underway involving iwi, the Department of Conservation, a salvage team, and Black Cat Cruises. The first phase of the recovery involves submerging the boat in deeper water to prevent further damage. The second phase, which will depend on weather conditions and safety requirements, aims to lift the boat out of the water. This operation is expected to begin within the next 24 hours, with phase one completed by Monday.

Concerns have been raised by conservation groups, including Maui and Hector's Dolphin Defenders, who argue that authorities are not doing enough to protect Hector's dolphins in Akaroa Harbour. They highlight the relentless tourism pressure in the area and insufficient oversight. Councillor Tyrone Fields also expressed deep concern over the impact of the grounding on the environment, noting it as the second incident in a sensitive area within three years. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission will be investigating the incident, and Black Cat Cruises has been approached for comment.

The recovery operation is complex and requires collaboration among multiple agencies and the local community to ensure safety and minimize environmental harm. Authorities are working diligently to address the situation and implement measures to protect the local ecosystem.
