Ukrainian officials reported emergency power cuts across several cities in the country as well as neighbouring Moldova on Saturday. The outages were caused by a technical malfunction affecting power lines linking the two nations, according to their respective energy ministers.

The situation was exacerbated by an unusual cold spell gripping Ukraine this winter, with temperatures expected to drop further in the coming days. Kyiv and other regions have experienced significant challenges, including disruptions to water supplies and subway services due to low voltage.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed skepticism about Russia's commitment to a pause in strikes on Kyiv, amid reports of ongoing Russian attacks targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The country is scrambling to repair damage caused by recent strikes, with over 1,000 apartment blocks in Kyiv still without heat.
