Rafael Hui, Former Hong Kong Official, Dies at 77

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rafael Hui, a former Chief Secretary of Hong Kong. The 77-year-old was convicted in 2014 for accepting nearly HK$20 million from a prominent land developer and spent seven and a half years in jail before being released in 2019.

Hui, who served as Hong Kong's No. 2 official from 2005 to 2007, died peacefully at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital after a brave fight with an acute illness. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Hong Kong's legal and political history.

The news comes as a reminder of the consequences of corruption and the ongoing challenges faced by public officials in maintaining integrity and trust in their positions.
