Shane Jones Halts NZ's Climate Declaration Signing

New Zealand's Resources Minister, Shane Jones, has refused to sign the Belém Declaration, a global climate agreement aimed at transitioning away from fossil fuels. Documents obtained under the Official Information Act reveal that New Zealand's negotiating team considered joining the declaration at COP30 in Brazil but ultimately did not proceed due to Jones' opposition.

The Belém Declaration was supported by countries such as Australia, the UK, and several Pacific nations. It was unsuccessful in gaining New Zealand's signature, with officials informing their colleagues that Jones did not agree to it. Climate Change Minister Simon Watts explained that consulting Jones was appropriate given his portfolios but critics argue this allowed minor coalition partners undue influence over government policy.

Francisco Hernandez of the Green Party expressed frustration at Jones' stance, calling it a 'veto' and suggesting the government's agenda is more aligned with coalition partners than climate concerns. Meanwhile, Labour's Deborah Russell supports the declaration, stating it aligns with New Zealand's commitments under COP28. She criticized Jones' opposition as disappointing given his pro-fossil fuel positions.

Jones defended his decision in an interview, saying such agreements are 'lofty' and impractical compared to his pragmatic approach. His office emphasized the need for secure energy sources, including coal, while exploring renewable alternatives. This debate highlights the tension between coalition partners' influence and climate activists' demands.
