Appeal for Witnesses as Recovery of Tourist Boat Grounded in Akaroa Begins

A witness appeal has been launched following the grounding of a tourist boat in Akaroa, New Zealand. The Black Cat Cruises catamaran ran aground on Saturday afternoon at Nīkau Palm Valley Bay, leading to the rescue of over 40 people.

Environment Canterbury (ECAN) has stated that the first phase of the recovery operation, which involves submerging the vessel in deep water to prevent further damage, is expected to begin on Monday. The second phase aims to remove the catamaran from the water, contingent on weather and safety conditions.

Various stakeholders, including Environment Canterbury, the Conservation Department, iwi, and Black Cat Cruises, are collaborating on the recovery efforts. Additionally, the Transport Accident Investigation Commission is conducting an inquiry to determine potential causes and prevent future incidents.

Alongside the recovery operations, there has been concern for the environmental impact, as the vessel's fuel likely leaked into the water. ECAN reports that oily sheens have diminished over time, with no signs of wildlife distress observed.

Local tour operators, such as Tony Muir and Roy Borelli, have expressed their commitment to aiding in the clean-up efforts. Despite the incident, scenic tours continue, though offerings may be adjusted due to the exclusion zone around the grounded vessel.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission is encouraging anyone who witnessed the grounding or has relevant information, photos, or videos to submit them via their website. Their inquiry aims to take between 12 months and two years to complete, focusing on survivability and environmental impact aspects.
