Sick and Wounded Palestinians Seek Medical Treatment in Egypt

A group of sick and wounded Palestinians have started crossing into Egypt through the Rafah border post after Israel temporarily reopened the crossing. Approximately 150 individuals, including medical patients, were expected to exit Gaza on Monday, while about 50 others would enter the territory. The Rafah crossing had been closed since May 2024, limiting access for thousands in need of healthcare and other essential services.

Over 20,000 Palestinian children and adults require medical attention and hope to use the reopening to leave Gaza. Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians outside the territory are eager to reenter and return home. The partial reopening is part of a broader ceasefire agreement, though movement remains tightly controlled with joint Israeli-Egyptian security screenings.

Tragically, more than one in five of those waiting for evacuation have been children, and over 11,000 cancer patients are among the sick. The destruction of Gaza's healthcare system by Israeli airstrikes has left the territory without adequate medical facilities, pushing many to operate in makeshift clinics with limited resources.

Dalia Abu Kashef, a 28-year-old who died while waiting for a liver transplant, and other patients have faced immense challenges in receiving timely care. International organizations like Médecins Sans Frontières and the World Health Organization have highlighted the dire situation, emphasizing the urgent need for better access and evacuation channels.

The reopening of Rafah also offers an opportunity for families torn apart by the conflict to reunite. Thousands who fled to Cairo earlier in the war now face an uncertain future. The crossing's limited functionality and strict security measures underscore the ongoing struggles faced by Palestinians seeking medical care and family reunification amid the region's instability.

The situation in Gaza remains perilous, with ongoing airstrikes and violence causing further displacement and loss of life. Efforts to stabilize the conflict through diplomacy and limited border access continue, but significant challenges remain for those striving to rebuild their lives and communities.
