Unfinished Bridge Collapse in Eastern China

An unfinished bridge in Yancheng City’s Xiangshui County, located in eastern China, collapsed on Monday evening, leaving two workers dead and three others missing. The incident occurred at the construction site of the Lianyungang-Shanghai Line, an ambitious provincial initiative aimed at creating a high-capacity north-south water transport corridor.

The collapse happened when the main span of the bridge, measuring 95 metres (312 feet), suddenly gave way. Two workers were pulled from the wreckage with severe injuries and later died in hospital. Rescue teams, including fire, maritime, and medical personnel, are continuing to search for three colleagues who remain unaccounted for.

A multi-agency emergency operation is underway, and authorities have imposed a temporary ban on waterway navigation in the immediate area to assist with the rescue and ensure public safety. The project is being carried out by China Railway 12th Bureau Group, which has been operating on a tight schedule.
