A 13-year-old boy from Western Australia demonstrated remarkable bravery and strength when he swam for four hours through treacherous waters to save his family after they were swept out to sea.
The teen, Austin Appelbee, who was kayaking with his mother and two younger siblings, faced challenging conditions as waves grew increasingly dangerous. Despite the perilous situation, Austin maintained his composure and determination, setting out to reach shore to call for help.
He discarded his life jacket to swim more efficiently and used a combination of breaststroke and freestyle to cover the 4 kilometers back to land. Upon reaching shore, he contacted emergency services to organize a search and rescue operation.
His mother, Joanne Appelbee, along with her 12-year-old son Beau and eight-year-old daughter Grace, were found clinging to a paddleboard in the open ocean off Quindalup. The family was rescued hours later after Austin's heroic efforts.
