Wellington Water is rushing to remove raw sewage from a treatment plant to prevent environmental damage and public health risks before it becomes septic.

Wellington Water Company Acts Swiftly to Mitigate Sewage Incident

Wellington Water is in a race against time to remove raw sewage from the Moa Point Treatment Plant before it turns septic. The plant experienced flooding early Wednesday morning, causing it to shut down and evacuate. Some sewage was sent to landfill, while the rest is being pumped out through an extensive outfall pipe to reduce beach contamination.

Divers are inspecting the pipe, but no blockage has been identified yet. Wellington Mayor Andrew Little plans to discuss the incident with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, highlighting the need for measures to prevent future failures that could harm the environment and public health.

Board chair Nick Leggett stressed the importance of clearing the plant safely and quickly to avoid further environmental degradation and ensure a safe working environment.
