Bithumb Bitcoin Blunder Results in 2,000 Bitcoins Mistakenly Credited to Users

South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb recently encountered a notable system error during an event payout. This error led to the abnormal distribution of Bitcoin to certain users, causing temporary price fluctuations on its platform.

The event was initially designed to offer participants either reward points or a small Bitcoin reward worth approximately 2,000 won. However, due to a system configuration mistake, the reward unit was incorrectly entered as a Bitcoin quantity instead of points. Consequently, some users received up to 2,000 Bitcoin, leading to significant gains for those who sold it quickly.

Bithumb promptly detected the issue through its internal monitoring systems and implemented trading restrictions on the affected accounts. The exchange reported that market prices recovered to normal levels within five minutes, thanks in part to its domino liquidation prevention system functioning as intended. Importantly, the company emphasized that this incident was not caused by a security breach or hacking and that customer assets remain secure.

While Bithumb has yet to identify any customer losses, it has pledged to disclose further measures transparently as their review continues. This event underscores the importance of careful system configuration and oversight in the cryptocurrency exchange sector.
