Gazans Describe Checks by Palestinian Militia at Rafah Crossing

EPA delays and security restrictions have limited the number of Palestinians returning to Gaza through the Rafah crossing since its reopening. Travelers reported checks conducted by the Abu Shabab militia, linked to Israel, at an Israeli military checkpoint within the Gaza Strip.

The militia performed searches and questioned travelers, often in coordination with Israeli forces. EU monitors at the crossing confiscated various items from those entering Gaza, including perfumes, make-up, phones, and power banks. Only 12 individuals, mostly women and children, were escorted to an Israeli inspection point after undergoing rigorous security checks.

These procedures have become a test of Hamas control in Gaza, with the group exerting pressure to reassert authority over the Rafah crossing. The process highlights the challenges faced by travelers and the ongoing tensions in the region.
