Call for Investigation into Moa Point Treatment Plant Failure

Wellington leaders are urging an investigation into the failure of the Moa Point Treatment Plant, which has been temporarily shut down due to raw sewage flooding. The plant's operator, Veolia, is under scrutiny for not fulfilling its contract. Local MP Julie Anne Genter highlighted the environmental impact, citing the presence of little blue penguins and dolphins in the bay. Meanwhile, Wellington mayor Andrew Little plans to meet with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to discuss setting up a formal investigation into the incident. The failure is causing millions of litres of untreated sewage to spill into the Cook Strait since early Wednesday.

Genter emphasized the need for action: 'We can do better and we have to do better.' She called for a comprehensive probe to prevent such failures in the future, ensuring the plant's performance meets public expectations. The mayor stressed that this cannot happen again and that getting the facts is crucial for preventing environmental degradation.
