Hong Kong’s Jimmy Lai Sentenced in National Security Trial

On Monday morning, a Hong Kong court delivered a verdict in the high-profile case involving former media executive Jimmy Lai Chee-ying. The verdict concludes a prolonged legal battle that has drawn international attention due to its implications for press freedom and geopolitical tensions.

Lai, 78, was convicted on two counts of conspiracy relating to collusion with foreign forces under China’s national security law and one count of conspiring to distribute seditious articles. He faces a minimum jail term of 10 years and could be sentenced to life imprisonment.

Three High Court judges presided over the hearing, which lasted approximately an hour. The court also handed down penalties to six senior executives from Apple Daily, three associated companies, and two activists. This marks one of the largest-scale trials under Hong Kong’s national security law.

Security measures outside the West Kowloon Court were heightened, with over 100 police officers deployed. Armored vehicles and barriers were present to maintain order during the proceedings. Foreign consulates, including those from the United States and the European Union, sent representatives to observe the trial.

Lai’s wife, Teresa Li Wan-kam, and retired Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun attended the hearing. The case has been a focal point for discussions on press freedom and the implications of national security laws in Hong Kong.
