Opposition Leader's Ally Kidnapped After Prison Release in Venezuela

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has raised concerns after her close ally, Juan Pablo Guanipa, was abducted just hours after his release from prison. The government had freed several prominent opposition members, including Guanipa, following months of politically motivated detentions. Machado shared on social media that heavily armed men in civilian clothing took Guanipa from his Caracas neighborhood shortly after midnight.

Guanipa's lawyer and other opposition figures were also released, but his whereabouts remain unknown. Families and rights groups have criticized the slow pace of prisoner releases, which follow pressure from the international community and calls for amnesty. The acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, has faced mounting criticism for not moving swiftly enough to free those detained for political reasons.

Guanipa's disappearance comes amid a broader push for dialogue and reconciliation in Venezuela, supported by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. His fate is yet to be determined, and his family has demanded proof of life and immediate release.
