Avalanche Causes Train Derailment in Switzerland

A passenger train carrying approximately 80 people derailed early Monday morning in southern Switzerland after an avalanche struck near the village of Goppenstein. The derailment occurred at 7:00 am local time, with authorities warning that injuries were likely. By mid-morning, 30 passengers had been evacuated from affected carriages, as rescue operations continued via ambulances and helicopters. 'The train derailed due to an avalanche in the Stockgraben area,' said a spokesperson for Swiss rail company BLS. Multiple casualties are feared as rescue teams rushed to the scene. The train had departed Spiez at 6:12 am and was en route to Brig when the incident happened, suspending rail traffic between Goppenstein and Brig until at least Tuesday.

Switzerland’s robust rail network, known for its punctuality and connectivity, connects cities, towns, and remote villages. Rail enthusiasts from around the globe traverse scenic routes, some featuring steep climbs. Authorities are currently assessing the situation and providing medical care to those affected. This incident follows a separate storm near Bern in 2023 that caused two train derailments within 20 minutes, resulting in 15 injuries.
