The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has initiated a series of military exercises in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz. These drills, which are being closely monitored by regional and international observers, aim to enhance the readiness of the IRGC in response to potential security threats in the area.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital waterway through which approximately 20% of the world's oil production passes. The exercises are being conducted as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to rise, with the US having deployed a large naval force in the region, including aircraft carriers like the USS Abraham Lincoln and the Gerald R Ford.
General Mohammad Pakpour, the chief of the IRGC, is overseeing these maneuvers. The drills are seen as a display of Iran's military capabilities and its determination to defend its interests in the face of increasing international pressure. Additionally, the exercises come ahead of scheduled talks between Tehran and Washington mediated by Oman, which could be an opportunity to address some of the ongoing tensions.
