Storm causes flooding in Christchurch and Akaroa

The recent storm has led to significant flooding in the regions of Christchurch and Akaroa, with heavy rain causing widespread damage and disruption.

A deep low pressure system east of New Zealand is slowly moving southward, bringing further heavy rain to the lower North Island and eastern South Island. Banks Peninsula has been issued an orange heavy rain warning until 6pm, with up to 100mm of additional rainfall expected to fall on top of what has already fallen.

A heavy rain watch remains in place for Christchurch (excluding Banks Peninsula), Canterbury Plains, and Foothills between the Rangitata River and Amberley until 10am. Additionally, a heavy rain watch is also active for Dunedin east of Pukerangi, which will expire at 9pm.

Christchurch City Council has stated that they are closely monitoring the weather situation, with roading crews on standby overnight. Surface flooding has already been reported, and more information will be available as daybreak approaches.

A state highway between Christchurch and Akaroa was closed at 11pm on Monday due to flooding. An update on the road is expected by 7am. MetService has also issued heavy swell warnings for Wellington and Wairarapa coasts from midday, with large waves and dangerous sea conditions anticipated.
