Lebanon's Hezbollah disarmament plan faces delays due to Israeli attacks

Lebanon's government faces challenges in disarming Hezbollah as Israeli attacks persist, delaying the second phase of the disarmament plan.

Lebanon's Hezbollah Disarmment Plan Faces Delays

Lebanon's government has announced that it will take at least four months to complete the second phase of its plan to disarm Hezbollah in the country. This comes amid ongoing pressure from the US and Israel, with Israeli military actions increasing in frequency.

The announcement by Minister Paul Morcos follows a cabinet session where the army leadership presented their timeline for the disarmament process. The second phase covers areas between the Litani and Awali rivers, about 40km south of Beirut.

Hezbollah has rejected calls to surrender weapons north of the Litani River, asserting that the ceasefire applies exclusively south of the waterway. Israeli military confirmed new raids on southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah fighters rebuilding infrastructure in the region.

Since the 2024 ceasefire, Israel has killed more than 370 people and launched over 10,000 air and ground attacks. The UN has repeatedly condemned these violations, urging Israel to withdraw fully from Lebanon.

The repeated strikes have hindered progress in the disarmament process, according to the army leadership.
