New Zealand Floods Cause Deaths and Power Outages

Heavy rains and strong winds have lashed New Zealand in recent days, killing one man and leaving thousands without power. The severe storm, which began on Friday (Feb 13), has caused widespread flooding and damage across the country. Areas like Wellington and Christchurch have been particularly affected.

PowerCo reported that about 10,000 households in the lower North Island were without electricity, while Orion noted over 200 homes on Banks Peninsula remain without power. Additionally, communities such as Lake Ferry and Akaroa are isolated due to flooded roads and slips.

The storm's impact has been significant, with wind speeds reaching a record high in Wellington since 2013. Residents have resorted to forming human chains to transport supplies across washed-out bridges.
