Banks Peninsula remains cut off due to flooding and landslips; roads are being restored as parts of Christchurch-Akaroa highway are closed.
The Banks Peninsula remains cut off by road following widespread damage from flooding and landslips. Civil defence controller Duncan Sandeman emphasizes that the priority for Wednesday is reopening roads and restoring communications. The area experienced ten times the monthly average rainfall over the past 48 hours, leading to significant infrastructure damage. A portion of State Highway 75, connecting Christchurch to Akaroa, was closed overnight due to the severe conditions.
