A major drug syndicate operating through the dark web has been uncovered by New Zealand police following a lengthy investigation.
Operation Solana, led by the National Organised Crime Group, targeted individuals involved in importing and distributing methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA, and ketamine across the country. Over two days, police executed 16 search warrants across Auckland and Hamilton, arresting 11 people and seizing significant quantities of drugs, cash, and firearms, including a 3D printed gun.
Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Hunt highlighted that the group utilized dark web marketplaces, encrypted messaging applications, and cryptocurrency services to obscure their identities and financial flows. Customs authorities in multiple countries had previously intercepted over 200 kilograms of controlled substances intended for this syndicate.
Eleven individuals, aged between 24 and 42, are expected in court facing charges related to drug importation, possession, and participation in an organized criminal group. Hunt emphasized that police are increasingly equipped to identify and dismantle criminal operations attempting to hide behind technology and encryption.
The arrests send a clear message: engaging in illegal activities via the dark web will not go undetected or unpunished.
