Israeli forces fired warning shots at foreign diplomats in the West Bank after they strayed from their approved route, prompting international condemnation.
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) fired "warning shots" at a group of foreign diplomats near Jenin after they strayed from their approved route. The area was described as an "active combat zone".
Video footage showed diplomats fleeing as shots were fired. Alessandro Tutino, Italy’s deputy consul general in Jerusalem, was present but unharmed.
Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani demanded clarification from Israel, stating, "Threats against diplomats are unacceptable." EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also urged an investigation.
The IDF claimed the delegation deviated from the approved route. Brigadier General Yaki Dolf launched an internal inquiry. The IDF stated, "The IDF regrets the inconvenience caused."
The incident occurs amid increasing international pressure on Israel over its Gaza operations.
