A former Ukrainian politician, Andriy Portnov, was fatally shot in Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred outside the American School of Madrid in Pozuelo de Alarcon, a wealthy suburb.
According to the Spanish interior ministry, unidentified gunmen attacked Portnov, 51, shooting him in the back and head before fleeing. Police were alerted to the incident around 9:15 am.
Portnov was previously a senior aide to Ukraine's former pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovich, who was ousted in 2014. He faced investigations in Ukraine related to treason and embezzlement, as well as international sanctions, which were later dropped. The US Treasury Department had placed him on a sanctions list in 2021.
This shooting follows a series of high-profile crimes involving Russians and Ukrainians in Spain since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The investigation is ongoing.
