China criticizes the US ban on Harvard's international students, citing damage to US credibility. Hong Kong University offers refuge to affected students.
The Chinese government has condemned the United States' recent ban on international students at Harvard University, arguing that the decision will damage America's global reputation.
In response, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has extended an invitation to affected students, offering streamlined admissions and academic support. The institution posted a news release saying it would provide unconditional offers, streamlined admission procedures and academic support to facilitate a seamless transition.
China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, emphasized that educational cooperation should not be politicized, asserting that the US policy harms its own credibility. "The relevant actions by the US side will only damage its own image and international credibility," she said.
The move has sparked considerable discussion on Chinese social media, with concerns raised about the US remaining a preferred destination for foreign students.
This issue has highlighted existing tensions between China and the US regarding student visas and treatment at US airports. Some Chinese students are now considering alternative study destinations, such as the UK.
