UN Expert Alleges Criminal Law Misuse in Guatemala
A United Nations expert, Margaret Satterthwaite, has concluded a visit to Guatemala, raising concerns about the misuse of criminal law by the country's prosecutor's office.
Systematic Targeting of Opponents
Satterthwaite's report suggests a pattern of targeting former prosecutors, judges, defense attorneys, journalists, and others who have challenged corruption or defended human rights. The UN Special Rapporteur stated the prosecutor's office, led by Consuelo Porras, is allegedly using criminal law to systematically deprive specific groups of their fundamental rights.
Prosecutor's Office Response
Porras has been sanctioned by the U.S. and other countries and is accused of obstructing corruption investigations. While Porras's office denies the allegations, claiming they act within the law and are themselves victims of attacks, Satterthwaite reports that over 60 justice operators and human rights lawyers have been targeted, with over 50 forced into exile.
President's Stance
President Bernardo Arevalo, who has been critical of Porras, supports Satterthwaite's observations and has tried to get Porras to resign.
