BBC Apologizes for Racial Slur at Baftas

Getty Images host Alan Cumming apologized to the audience after a racial slur was heard during the ceremony. The slip-up occurred when Tourette's campaigner John Davidson shouted the N-word while US actors Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage.

BBC content chief Kate Phillips emailed staff reiterating their apology and confirmed that another offensive term had been removed from the broadcast. She emphasized that the slip-up was unintentional and acknowledged the distress caused to viewers.

The ceremony was delayed by two hours and shown on BBC One, with producers editing its length. Producers were in a TV truck and did not hear Davidson's outburst during the live broadcast.

Award attendees were warned about Tourette's verbal tics at the start of the show, and host Alan Cumming addressed it during the broadcast. Phillips stated that this does not lessened the impact and upset caused by the incident.

Labour MP Dawn Butler called for an 'urgent explanation' after the slur was noticed on iPlayer, calling it 'painful and unforgivable'. Bafta issued a statement apologizing unreservedly, thanking Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo for their professionalism and dignity during the incident.

Warner Bros representatives complained to Bafta immediately after the incident, ensuring concerns were passed on to the BBC. Davidson expressed deep mortification over his tics being misunderstood, stating he left early in the ceremony due to distress.
