UNRWA head slams US-backed Gaza aid model as wasteful, a distraction from atrocities, and bypassing UN efforts amid famine warnings and chaotic scenes.
Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), has strongly criticized the new US-backed aid distribution model in Gaza.
Lazzarini described the model as a waste of resources and a distraction from atrocities. He stated that UNRWA already has a fully functional aid distribution system.
Speaking from Japan, Lazzarini emphasized the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian access, warning that famine is imminent.
Recent operations by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in southern Gaza have been marred by chaotic scenes, with desperate Palestinians rushing for assistance.
Lazzarini argued that the Israeli-proposed aid distribution model goes against fundamental humanitarian principles, risking the deprivation of essential aid to vulnerable Gazans. GHF has been accused of prioritizing Israeli military goals and bypassing the UN system.
