RAF Base in Cyprus Targeted in Drone Strike

The RAF base at Akrotiri in Cyprus recently faced a suspected drone strike, according to the Ministry of Defence. No casualties were reported in the incident, which occurred on Sunday night local time. The Ministry emphasized that force protection measures are in place to safeguard personnel and assets.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer confirmed that the UK has allowed the US to use British military bases for 'limited defensive purposes' following the US-Israeli strikes against Iran's leadership. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was among those targeted in the initial attacks, which led to Iran's retaliatory actions, including ballistic missiles and drones targeting several regional allies.

Defence Secretary John Healey highlighted the risks faced by British troops and civilians in the Middle East due to Iran's 'indiscriminate attacks.' While Healey assured that Cyprus was not a target, recent incidents, such as an RAF Typhoon jet shooting down an Iranian drone in a defensive patrol, demonstrate the ongoing tensions. The UK has reportedly learned from past mistakes and is now focusing on collective self-defence to protect its citizens and allies.

The US is expected to use RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia for further strikes against Iranian missile sites. This development adds another layer of complexity to the already volatile situation in the Middle East.
