Police officers conducted a raid in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, leading to the capture of Sebastian Marset, one of South America's most wanted drug kingpins. President Rodrigo Paz celebrated the arrest as a turning point in the fight against organized crime in the continent.
Marset, a 34-year-old Uruguayan citizen, was indicted on money laundering charges and accused of leading a transnational criminal group. The DEA had offered a $2m bounty for his capture. After his arrest, Marset was transferred to US custody and seen boarding a US-tagged plane.
His arrest follows a series of operations targeting major drug cartels in the region. Paraguay has also sought his extradition to stand trial in their country. This arrest highlights a renewed US effort to more aggressively address drug trafficking across the Western Hemisphere.
