Transport Minister Mable Chan has announced plans to increase direct flight capacity and transfer services in Hong Kong, taking advantage of the challenges posed by the ongoing Middle East turmoil. The US-Israel war on Iran has severely disrupted global trade and aviation networks, compelling Hong Kong to seek alternative strategies to maintain its competitive edge. Chan emphasized the importance of reducing reliance on traditional oil sources and leveraging Hong Kong's strategic position as a hub for global travel.

The completion of the three-runway system and the upcoming opening of the redeveloped second passenger terminal building in May are crucial steps in achieving this goal. These infrastructure developments are expected to significantly enhance Hong Kong's airport capacity and efficiency. Additionally, to address the increased fuel surcharges imposed by local airlines, the government has mandated that operators clearly list these charges on their websites and tickets, ensuring greater transparency for consumers.
