Yemen Faces Severe Food Insecurity

Yemen is facing a severe food insecurity crisis, with over 18 million people at risk of hunger due to conflict, economic collapse, and reduced humanitarian aid.

Hunger Looming Over Yemen

While international attention is focused on the conflict in Iran, Yemen is facing a severe humanitarian crisis. Over 18 million people, nearly half the population, are projected to face severe food insecurity. The situation is dire, with millions at risk of slipping into life-threatening hunger due to conflict, economic collapse, and reduced humanitarian aid. Yemen's crisis is exacerbated by severe aid cuts, which have led to the closure of therapeutic feeding centres and a significant drop in admissions for severe acute malnutrition. This crisis is not inevitable, and urgent action is needed to restore and scale up integrated food security and nutrition funding. Donors must prioritize nutrition treatment for children and pregnant women, including ready-to-use therapeutic food. Yemen also needs support in tracking food availability and nutrition to respond effectively. Immediate targeted donor action can prevent widespread loss of life and help communities recover. It is not too late to avert an even greater tragedy.
