UN Chief Calls for Diplomatic Solution in Lebanon Conflict

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the international community to support Lebanon in its efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict. He stressed that military solutions are not viable and that only diplomacy, dialogue, and full implementation of UN Charter and Security Council resolutions can bring about peace. Guterres emphasized the importance of protecting UN peacekeepers, who remain in position, and warned against attacks on their positions, which are in breach of international law and may constitute war crimes. He also noted that three peacekeepers were wounded earlier this month in south Lebanon.

Guterres is working with his special coordinator for Lebanon, engaging with all actors around the clock to bring the parties to the table. He said, 'There is no military solution, only diplomacy, dialogue, and full implementation of the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions. The diplomatic avenues are available, including through my special coordinator... and through key member states.'

The conflict escalated after Hezbollah's attack on Israel in response to the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes. Guterres called for an immediate de-escalation and the cessation of hostilities. He also warned against any attacks against peacekeepers and their positions, stating that such actions are completely unacceptable and may constitute war crimes.

Guterres's remarks come as Lebanon faces increasing pressure from the ongoing Middle East war. He urged the international community to stand by Lebanon and support its government, which last year committed to disarming Hezbollah. The UN chief is doing everything possible to bring about an immediate de-escalation and the cessation of hostilities, ensuring that the situation does not further escalate and that all parties return to the negotiating table.

Key Points:

1. No Military Solution: Guterres reiterated that military actions are not the way forward and that only diplomacy and dialogue can lead to a resolution.

2. Protection of Peacekeepers: He emphasized the importance of safeguarding UN peacekeepers and condemned any attacks on their positions, which are illegal and may be war crimes.

3. Immediate De-escalation Needed: Guterres called for an immediate end to hostilities and for all parties to return to the table to discuss a peaceful resolution.

4. Support for Lebanon: He urged the international community to support Lebanon's efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.

5. Role of Special Coordinator: Guterres is working closely with his special coordinator to engage all actors and bring them to the negotiating table.
