Mother's Day Grief in Gaza Amid Ongoing Conflict

In Gaza, Mother’s Day is marked by sorrow as families remember loved ones lost in Israeli attacks. Mothers like Em Rami Dawwas and Maram Ahmed share their grief

Loss and Grief on Mother’s Day in Gaza

While much of the Middle East celebrated Mother’s Day with flowers and gifts this weekend, in Gaza the occasion served as a painful reminder of lost lives due to Israeli attacks. Em Rami Dawwas sat in her tent in Gaza City, remembering her three sons killed in Israeli operations. Two of their bodies are still withheld by authorities.

Young Maram Ahmed shared her sadness of losing her mother and family in an Israeli air attack. She reflected on how she used to buy gifts for her mother, even if it meant using her allowance. 'I just wanted to make her happy,' she said, holding onto memories of her lost loved ones.

The conflict, which began in October 2023, has had a devastating impact on Palestinian families. Over 72,000 people have been killed since the start of the war, with many more injured and displaced. Mothers like Dawwas and Ahmed are left to mourn their lost family members, often finding solace only at their gravesides.

Amnesty International has reported on the brutal price paid by Palestinian women and girls during the conflict. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen, with essential services disrupted and living conditions severely deteriorated. Despite a fragile ceasefire agreed between Israel and Hamas, ongoing violations have led to further suffering for Palestinians.
