South Korean special counsel raided top prosecution offices investigating ex-first lady Kim Keon Hee's case, focusing on prosecutorial misconduct in dropping ch
The Supreme Prosecutors Office and the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office in South Korea faced a raid by a special counsel team on Monday. The investigation targets allegations that prosecutors intentionally dropped stock manipulation charges against former first lady Kim Keon Hee in 2024.
Kim Keon Hee was later indicted for conspiring with a BMW dealer and her associate to manipulate the company's stock price between 2010 and 2012, resulting in illegal profits. However, a district court recently acquitted her on the charges.A second comprehensive special counsel team led by Kwon Chang-young was established last month to investigate 17 unresolved allegations, including suspected prosecutorial attempts to cover up Kim's case. The team has booked Lee Chang-soo and Cho Sang-won, former officials at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office, barring them from leaving the country.
The team aims to secure prosecution offices' instructions, communications, and investigation materials related to Kim's case to uncover any potential abuse of power or misconduct. The raid signifies a significant step in addressing long-standing concerns about prosecutorial integrity and accountability.
