SEOUL, March 22, 2023 — The anticipated comeback concert of K-pop group BTS, titled 'BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE: ARIRANG,' took place in Gwanghwamun Square, Seoul. Despite the event's high-profile promotion, the actual attendance fell far short of expectations.
HYBE shares experienced a dramatic decline of 15.55% following the concert, underperforming not just the broader entertainment sector but also compared to its peers like SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment. The KRX K-Content Index also saw a drop in the range of 6 percent.
Initial estimates for attendance were as high as 260,000 people, while the actual figure stood at around 77,000 when including crowds in nearby areas. This significant underperformance led to decreased investor confidence and a sharp sell-off in HYBE stock.
However, market analysts remain bullish on BTS's upcoming global tour, which is expected to attract millions of fans worldwide. The tour could contribute over $1.6 trillion in revenue for HYBE, driving their annual revenue up by 65.3% and operating profit by a staggering 978.2%. Leading securities firms have raised their price targets for HYBE stock, signaling long-term optimism despite the recent setback.
The sharp decline in HYBE's stock performance reflects investor skepticism about the long-term viability of BTS-driven economic growth. While the K-pop group continues to be a major force in global entertainment, the discrepancy between promotional hype and actual outcomes has raised questions about their financial sustainability.
