Over 1.2 million displaced as Israel’s intensified attacks continue in Lebanon, with calls for annexation of southern regions.
Isreal's far-right minister of finance, Bezalel Smotrich, has urged his country to annex southern Lebanon as the military's assault intensifies. The bombardment of Lebanon 'needs to end with a different reality entirely,' including a change in Israel's borders, he said.
The United Nations reports that over 1.2 million people have been displaced across Lebanon since early March amid Israel's attacks. The conflict has led to severe humanitarian consequences, with at least 64 attacks on healthcare facilities resulting in 51 deaths and 91 injuries.
Smotrich called for the annexation of southern Lebanon, referring to the Litani River as the new border. This strategy aims to isolate the region from the rest of the country and depopulate the southern area through destruction of infrastructure.
Lebanon's Aoun has warned that the attack on a bridge could be a prelude to a ground invasion. The Israeli military has destroyed bridges and homes, pushing civilians to flee under threat of forced displacement orders.
Humanitarian groups are raising concerns about continued attacks on Lebanese health workers, which are protected under international law. The conflict has killed at least 1,039 people, including 118 children, since early March.
